Computer vision syndrome affects people who use computers for a prolonged period of time. It is one of the eye conditions which are characterized by redness, dryness, stinging feeling in eyes, burning, photophobia etc. This is not a serious condition at all and it is better to know about its complications and causes to protect our eyes.

Computer Vision Syndrome Causes:

There are many causes associated with this condition such as uncorrected refractive errors which cause blurred vision, headache, eye strain, asthenopia. One must wear glasses to correct these kinds of issues. It is also advised not to overextend the neck when using computer. The angle at which we look the computer monitor is also a main thing to care for. Our eyebrows should be always lower than the top of monitor.

Medical condition such as lid retraction can increase the amount of tear evaporation and can lead to computer vision syndrome. If the humidity in working area is low, it can also cause this syndrome. In a recent study, it is found out that women are more prone to get reduction in tear film layer when they age, compared to men. This can be because of hormonal difference. Excessive lighting as well as insufficient lighting is also one of the factors we have to note. Flickering lights as well as high power lights should not be used in working areas. This is known to cause discomfort because of the glare.

Blinking rate gets reduced when we use computers. It is estimated that we blink only for four times a minute. This is because we try to look the computer screen in an attentive manner while working. This is also one of the causes known to cause meibomian gland dysfunction, finally leading to dry eyes. One must try to blink at least 18 times a minute.

Dry eye condition is also known to cause computer vision syndrome. If the eyes are getting dry with prolonged usage of computers, one can use artificial eye drops to lubricate the eyes. However one must be very careful not to use eye drops with preservatives, as it can cause problems in eyes.

Sometimes, the symptoms are confused with other medical conditions. As computer vision syndrome is a common condition, people do not take the signs into account and just leave it. This is just a common thing that happens with everyone but if it affects your functionality, it is recommended to consult a doctor as soon as possible. Some of the signs are refractive errors, dry eye syndrome, lagophthalmos, blepharitis, presbyopia, allergic conjunctivitis etc.

Some of the possible complications of computer vision syndrome are superficial punctuate keratitis, keratititis and optical decentration in glasses. Decentration is detected by examining papillary distance. Monocular measurements are also taken.
