Epi - LASIK Eye Surgery

Posted by Accuspire on Jun 22nd 2023

It is a vision correction surgery similar to LASEK and LASIK, a fine alternative for certain eye types. It this surgery, the corneal flap created is thinner when compared to LASIK, advantageous for people with thin cornea. The flap is similar to LASEK flap. The flap contains only epithelial cells from corneal outer layer.

In a LASEK, the flap is created with a sharp blade. In Epi- LASIK, the flap is separated with the help of epithelial separator from the stroma. The epithelial separator consists of an plastic oscillating blade with a blunt edge. Alcohol solution is not applied during Epi LASIK procedure as some surgeons believe that alcohol may slow down the healing process of epithelial cells. The flap is then folded back to the stroma and with the help of an eximer laser, it is reshaped. A soft contact lens is applied which acts as a protective layer and to heal quickly.

It may take three or more days for a person to see clearly after the procedure. Patients may have 20/40 or even 20/20 vision. For others it might take longer up to six months. Do not forget to use the medicine prescribed by doctor and also to use eye drops.

Some surgeons consider it best than LASIK for some patients. Is it a plus for athletes, police officers, boxers etc as there is no risk of dislodged flap. If there is any discomfort, it can be eased with the use of painkillers and the discomfort is usually less.
