Eyelash is no just a cosmetic fringe item. It protects the eyes from dust which can cause infection. They also fall and grow like our hair in a 6-10 weeks cycle. Even losing an eyelash every day is a normal process. But if the eyelashes are shedding more, it can be a symptom of eye problem or problem in any other part of the body.

Some of the causes of eyelash loss are:

Irritation caused by cosmetics – if you apply eye makeup and leave it for a long time, the lashes may get irritated. Sometimes eyelash curlers and lash extensions also speed up the shedding process. Allergy from using mascara is also one of the causes for eyelash irritation.

Blepharitis – when there is an itchy and burning sensation along the swelling and redness in eyes, it indicates blepharitis. It occurs when oil glands are clogged, causing chronic inflammation and eyelash follicle problems.

Trichotillomania – it is a condition where a person is suffering from psychological distress, stress and emotion is pulling out his own eyelash.

Skin cancer – sometimes skin cancer is also one of the causes for eyelash shedding as it can interrupt growth of eyelashes and spreads harmful cells.

Some of the other causes of eyelash shedding are recurrent or chronic chalazion or styes, ocular rosaceae, fungal or bacterial infection, mites etc.

If the hair is falling from scalp, eyebrows as well as eyelids, it can mean a health problem and the common cause is alopecia and thyroid disorder.
