We consider eye floaters as dust particles that float in the eyes. But it is not so. With age, the gel-like particle of the eyes which is called the vitreous floats across the eye and appear like dust particles. These float towards the centre of the eyes and makes the shadow fall on the retina. It is visible only when the person looks at the bright light like the sky or the white background.

This condition is not serious until it disturbs the vision. But it necessary to be cautious as this may be the symptom for some of the eye diseases. It might be an indication of eye tumors, a torn retina, or it may be also an indication of migraine headaches.

The doctor should immediately be consulted when this symptom persists. This may be due to retinal tear or at times might be a detachment of the retina. Such ailment results in the permanent loss of vision. A large amount of floaters, a sudden occurrence of the floaters, vision loss at a peripheral stage and pain due to floaters indicate serious problems.

In patients who have undergone surgery also tend to produce eye floaters. The doctor should be consulted instantly. In such cases dilation might be required. Eye floaters may be treated with laser therapy. It can also be curbed by the removal of the vitreous segment. Though these may not be a permanent solution, this can reduce the risk of permanent vision loss.
