LASEK Eye Surgery: Advancements in Combined Laser Eye Surgery for Vision Correction

Posted by Accuspire on Jun 8th 2023

LASEK surgery is done to correct hyperopia, myopia and astigmatism. It is done in combination of certain methods from LASIK and PRK. Undoubtedly LASIK is the most popular eye surgery, but PRK or LASEK is a better option when the patient’s eye condition is not suitable for LASIK. The cornea is reshaped with the help of an excimer laser, and allows light to properly fall on retina for clear vision without need for any aid such as contact lenses or spectacles.

During a LASEK eye surgery, the corneal epithelium is removed from the stromal layer. It is not completely removed as in PRK. The surgeon shifts or pushes the epithelium flap to one side of cornea. It remains attached there. After the treatment, the epithelial tissue is brought to the surface of the eye, covering the laser stroma. Then a bandage is placed till it gets healed.

It has a high success rate and the vision may appear hazy for a week, finally becoming normal and clear. The flap made during LASEK is thin when compared to the flap done in LASIK. It is suitable for persons having thin cornea. It is also an excellent option for persons having high myopia. During a LASIK, the structural integrity of cornea may get complicated some times, but there is no such complication during a LASEK. The risk of dry eyes is also slight.

If you wear contact lenses, avoid using it for a period of time as specified by the surgeon as contact lenses may modify the natural shape of cornea. Numbing drops and diluted alcohol is used during the process. A special contact lens is placed over the eye which acts as a protective bandage. It just takes 15 minutes per eye for performing LASEK and to make the patient feel relaxed, the surgeon usually gives a mild sedative.

If you feel blurry eyes, dry eyes or eye infection, contact your surgeon and he will recommend whether advancement is required or not.
