Allergic conjunctivitis is diagnosed easily by using a slit lamp microscope. The eye is also examined for swollen blood vessels. The family history of allergies is also taken into account. A specific type of white blood vessel is tested, if the allergy is not clear. A small area of conjunctiva is scrapped and tested.

Treatment for eye allergies:

Avoiding contact with the substance causing the problem is advised. If the allergy causing agent is unknown, a skin or blood test can identify it. Avoid going to outdoors if the cause of allergy is pollen and when the pollen count is highest. Usually pollens are higher during morning and evening. For protection one can use eyeglasses or sunglasses.

Keep your windows closed and avoid using window fans, as it can pull pollens inside. Use air conditioner instead and clean it regularly for allergen free air. High humidity is also another cause for molds to grow. Keep your bathroom, basement and kitchen clean and maintain the humidity level between 30-50 percent. Use a dehumidifier in moist places.

Keep dust mites away from your skin and always use allergen reducing covers for bedding as well as pillows. Use hot water to wash your bed cloth. Use damp cloth to clean the floor instead of dry mop. This will trap the allergens.

Keep your pets outside the home if pets are the cause for allergy. Do not allow pets inside your room. Lay tiles on the floor instead of carpeting as carpeting can trap the danders in it. Immediately wash your hands after touching the pets.
