Difference Between Laser Cataract Surgery And Traditional Cataract Surgery

Posted by Accuspire on Apr 15th 2021

It is estimated that nearly 3 million cataract surgeries are performed annually in U.S. Cataract is nothing but cloud appearance on the eye lens and it makes a person have difficulty in seeing, driving and difficulty while reading. During the initial developing stage, it does not cause any harm to the eyes but eventually it disturbs our vision. This is why cataract surgery is done to remove the cloudy lens and instead place an artificial lens.

The artificial lens is also known as intraocular lens. Traditional cataract surgery is performed commonly all over the world. With the help of a scalpel, a small incision is created on the side of the cornea. A micro surgical instrument is inserted through the incision and it creates a circular opening on the lens. Sound waves are applied with the help of a vibrating pen and are used to break the centre part of the lens and the broken parts are sucked out. Finally the intra ocular lens is placed in position of the previous lens.

Ultra sound imaging device is used in a laser surgery to note down the information regarding condition of the natural lens and for inside eye mapping. The details are displayed on the computer monitor and we can see where exactly the incision has to be done. Then a laser is focused to make incision on the lens and to soften the lens. Ultra sound probe is then used to break the lens and suck the lens out from eyes. There are no stitches involved in this procedure.

Laser procedure is also done to correct astigmatism and laser also requires less energy to break the cataract, which in turn reduces the risk of corneal swelling. Ultra sound on the other hand requires more energy. The recovery is also faster in laser assisted cataract.
