Corneal dystrophies are genetic and pass on within family members. It can appear at any age and both men and women are affected equally.

Corneal Dystrophies Diagnosis:

The ophthalmologist checks the eye for any corneal dystrophy and asks about the family history of eye disease. A slit lamp microscope is used to examine the eye. With the help of this the front part of eye is examined thoroughly. Sometimes a person's eye may not show any symptoms and so routine eye examination is done to find out corneal dystrophy. Genetic testing is also done to identify it.

Corneal Dystrophies Treatment:

Treatment differs according to the type and severity of the symptoms. If there are no symptoms the ophthalmologist monitors the eye closely for any progressing disorder. Eye drops can also ease corneal dystrophy and laser treatment is also done.

If a person is suffering from corneal erosion antibiotics, ointments, lubricating eyedrops and special contact lenses are provided to protect the cornea. Laser therapy is done if the erosion continuous to happen. If the condition is severe, corneal transplant is done by removing the underlying corneal tissue and replacing it with a clear donor corneal tissue. Partial corneal transplant is done if a person has Fuch's dystrophy.
