Can Laser Surgery Cure Keratoconus

Posted by Accuspire on Jun 8th 2022

Laser eye surgery is in practice for more than three decades. It is used to correct long sightedness, short sightedness and astigmatism. Laser surgery involves tissue removal from cornea and reshaping it to provide clear eye sight without the need of glasses. To perform laser surgery, the cornea must be healthy and that is why people suffering from keratoconus, even with the milder form cannot perform LASIK or other laser procedures.

Corneal Ectasia:

It is thinning of the eye cornea. This is seen in some people who had LASIK surgery in the past. Retrospectively, they are not suitable for LASIK because of the undiagnosed keratoconus. Today, the corneal shape is carefully examined and has also eliminated post laser complications such as corneal ectasia. Inform your surgeon if you have a family history of keratoconus before performing laser surgery because a sub clinical form of keratoconus known as forme frusta keratoconus can also be present. It is more common than the symptom revealing keratoconus and can affect the eyes cornea after laser surgery.

Combined laser and collagen cross linking:

Collagen cross linking is effective in stopping the progression of keratoconus. It doesn’t cure the disease completely but stops it from damaging the eyes further. It is effective for teenagers. Some surgeons combine laser and cross linking technique to provide strength to the cornea and to minimize ectasia. However additional data is not available.
