Ischemic Optic Neuropathy

This condition is also known as ION. In this condition, the blood does not flow properly to the optic nerve present in our eyes, causing damage to the nerves. There is sudden loss of vision in one or both the eyes.

The optic nerve is responsible for carrying signals from eyes to brain and when the blood flow is reduced, the nerve does not get enough nutrition and oxygen. This causes the nerve finally to stop working. This condition affects the peripheral vision as well as the central vision. The vision loss is permanent, but still people will have some peripheral vision.

Ischemic Optic Neuropathy Symptoms:

The vision will get darkened for some few seconds and it will be back to normal. This condition is called Transient Ischemic Attack and it happens prior to ION. Consult your doctor right away and prevent further vision loss.

People who have high blood pressure, who smoke cigarettes, who have glaucoma, migraine, clogged arteries and swelling in arteries are susceptible to this condition.

Ischemic Optic Neuropathy Diagnosis:

Eye examination is done by the ophthalmologist to diagnose this condition. The pupils are dilated to trace optic nerve swelling. The fluid pressure in the eyes is also examined.

Ischemic Optic Neuropathy Treatment:

If the condition is caused by arterial swelling in head, steroid pills are usually prescribed. This usually stops ION from developing in another eye. Other health problems such as high blood pressure, clogged arteries, migraine headache are also treated. However there is no treatment to improve vision loss caused by ION.
