This is a condition in which the arteries get swollen up. Arteries are responsible for carrying blood from the heart. When this gets swollen up, the blood flow gets reduced. This condition affects the arteries present in the arms, upper body and neck and it is also called as temporal or cranial arteritis as it affects the head. This condition is also known as anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION) as it reduces the blood flow and causes painless and sudden vision loss.

Giant Cell Arteritis Symptoms:

The symptoms vary from person to person. Some have severe headache, scalp tenderness and head pain. The eyesight also gets affected and there is also sudden vision loss. The vision loss occurs in one eye at first and slowly it damages the second eye as well. some of the other symptoms are headache, fever, fatigue, blurred vision, double vision, jaw cramps while chewing, stiffness in hips, arms and neck, weight loss etc.

People who are older than fifty are susceptible to this condition and women are most likely to get affected. Scandinavian people are more likely to develop this condition and it is rare in Asian and African descent people. Another type of inflammatory disorder associated with this disease is Polymyalgia rheumatic which involves stiffness and pain in the hips. This condition occurs when a person is given high doses of antibiotics.
