When you look at a clear and bright sky or you look at a computer screen and notice a little string across the eyes, it is nothing but eye floaters. These eye floaters are harmless but in some cases they indicate medical emergency.

Floaters and spots are small pieces of the vitreous. Vitreous is a part between the lens and retina. They occasionally become loose within the eyes back portion. What we see is not the pieces, but their shadows cast on retina. If you try to follow one you cannot. It moves when your eye moves. Eye flashes are caused when the optic nerves are stimulated. This is because of mechanical stimulation like getting hit on the head or when the retina is torn or detached from the eyes back part.

If you see floaters and light flashes get immediate medical assistance. Their sudden visibility can mean a vitreous detachment or serious retinal detachment. Recent studies have revealed that one in seven people with this symptom have teared or detached retina. Retinal detachment can be treated by an eye surgeon and must be attached soon. Otherwise it may cause permanent vision loss.

Most people do not treat eye floaters. However if you see numerous floaters consult your doctor. He may advise laser therapy asset break up the debris present in vitreous.
