Short term vision alteration

The Iris present in the eyes dilates and constricts at a much slower speed because of alcohol. It becomes a major issue for drivers as they cannot react quickly to the oncoming headlights. The pupil reaction gets slower. When a person is under the influence of alcohol and driving during night time he is unable to make distinctions between various objects. The ability to adjust vision according to the contrast gets lowered. Eye twitching is also caused by excessive alcohol intake. It also causes dry eyes.

Long-term damage

Recent studies have shown that higher alcohol consumption increases cataract formation in patients and also age related macular degeneration. Heavy drinking also affect the liver, disabling the absorption of vitamins which are needed to maintain healthy eyesight example Vitamin B1 deficiency which is caused due to alcohol consumption. It also causes Vitamin A deficiency such as dryness, retinal damage and night blindness. It also causes painless loss of vision. Alcohol intake by pregnant women causes permanent eye damage to the baby and underdeveloped optic nerve etc.
