Corneal ulcer is an eye disease caused by an infection in the cornea. This condition manifests itself as a painful red eye. People suffering from this condition will experience redness, pain, vision deterioration, and discharge from the eyes.

Corneal Ulcers Causes:

Acanthamoeba is one of the causes of this condition. It is a common parasite that can enter the eye and cause damage. They are found in tap water, swimming pools, hot tubs, and other water sources. People who wear contact lenses while swimming have a risk of developing this condition. The parasite is also known to cause acanthamoeba keratitis, which is also a serious eye condition. It may cause permanent scarring as well as vision loss.

Contact lens solution can also cause this condition. Fusarium, a type of fungus known to cause fungal keratitis, is also a culprit. The herpes simplex virus is also known to cause this condition. It damages the exterior portion of the eye as well as the deep layers present on the surface of the eyes.

Some of the other causes of this condition are immune system problems, general infection, dry eyes, eye allergies, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory diseases, and psoriasis.

Corneal Ulcers Management:

If you are a contact lens wearer and experience reduced vision with painful eyes, consult your doctor immediately. It can indicate an ocular emergency. Never attempt self-medication as it can harm the eyes. If you wear contact lenses, it is important to practice good hygiene. Wash your hands before and after wearing contact lenses.
