Corneal abrasion is a scrape or scratch on the surface of cornea. Makeup brushes, tree branches and fingernails are some of the culprits. Dry eyes and rubbing your eyes are also some of the other causes of corneal abrasion.

Corneal Abrasion Symptoms:

Some of the symptoms of corneal abrasion are blurry vision, hazy vision, sensitivity to light, painful eyes, watery eyes and foreign particle sensation in eyes.

The cornea is made up of many nerve cells. When there is damage to the eye surface, the pain receptor cells transmit it to the brain. There are many number of pain receptor cells present in our cornea compared to our skin.

Corneal Abrasion Diagnosis:

Fluorescein is applied on the eye surface and slit lamp is used to examine whether there is a cut or scratch on the cornea.

Corneal Abrasion Treatment:

If there is an injury in the eye the ophthalmologist makes us wear a patch on the injured eye. Moisturizing eye drops are also given to soothe the corneal layer. Antibiotic eye drops are also given to prevent further eye infection. Special eye drops are also given to dilate the pupil and it also relieves pain.

Do not rub the eyes when it is healing, as rubbing slows down healing. One should not wear contact lenses when the cornea is damaged.

Always protect your eyes by using protective eye wear when you are using lawn mowers, trimming brushes or cutting a wood log. While you are playing any sports, always wear protective eye glasses.
