Cataract Surgery Unveiled: Restoring Vision with Precision

Posted by Accuspire on May 25th 2023

Cataracts is nothing but ‘clouding of the eye lens.’ It causes loss of vision which cannot be corrected with eye glasses, LASIK or contact lens. It may sound frightening but there is nothing to worry as modern day surgery has the tendency to restore vision to its normal state.

Cataract is mostly associated with ageing process. A report by ‘National Eye Institute’ concludes that 68.3 percent Americans above 80 are suffering from cataract. It is also feared that it will grow further.

During a cataract surgery, the clouded lens is removed and replaced with an artificial lens, also called as intraocular lens, to restore the lost vision. An overnight stay is generally not needed and it is done on an outpatient basis.

Modern cataract procedure uses an ultra sound device of high frequency, which breaks up the cloudy lens apart. The cloudy lens is then removed by way of suction. Another method to do the cataract procedure is ‘phacomulsification’ or ‘phaco’. It is performed with smaller incisions and it promotes faster healing. It also reduces the risk of cataract surgery complications.

After all the pieces are removed from eyes, the new lens is placed behind the iris and pupil. Finally the surgeon closes the incision in eyes, completing the surgery and a protective layer is placed in eyes to keep it safe in the rookie stage.
