Blepharitis And Its Treatment

Blepharitis is a condition in which oily flakes and bacteria accumulate at the base of our eyelashes. The eyelids become red and swollen; feeling of burning sensation is also there. It is a very common condition for people who have dandruff, dry eyes and oily skin.

Every person in this world has certain amount of bacteria on the skin. But some people, when compared to others have more bacteria on their eyelashes. Dandruff like flakes is formed on the eyelashes for people suffering from blepharitis. As a result the oil glands do not function normally.

Treatment For Blepharitis:

Blepharitis does not have any cure. But it can be controlled by following some of the measures such as:

Warm compress - take a clean cloth and wet it in warm water. Dry it for some time. Close your eyes and place the warm cloth over your eyes for one minute. The cloth should be wet at regular time interval to make it stay warm. When it is applied the oil glands do not get clogged and the flakes sticking on the eyelid gets loosened. Electronic massager device is also available with ophthalmologist to unclog the oil glands.

Eyelid scrub - one can also use eyelid scrubs to gently scrub the eyelashes. Scrub for at least 15 seconds.

Antibiotic ointment - antibiotic ointments are also used on eyelids. Take a small amount of ointment in a clean cotton swab and apply it gently over the base of eyelids. Do it as per doctor’s recommendation.

Eye drops - steroid eye drops or artificial tears reduce swelling, dry eyes and redness. This makes sure that the oil glands work normal.

Eye lid and skin hygiene - keep your eyelids clean always, ensuring your eyelids are clean and free from blepharitis. One can also use baby shampoo to wash the eyelashes daily. Apply antibacterial shampoo to wash hair and scalp. Antiseptic sprays also control bacteria from growing.
